Four persons were arrested and 950 kg of 'ganja' was reportedly seized in Tummalapalem village in Visakhapatnam district on Friday.

Quoting sources, The New Indian Express reported that the hemp was being smuggled to East Godavari from Pedabayalu of Vizag Agency in an oil tanker, which was intercepted near Tummalapalem area.

The report adds that this was the third such incident where an oil tanker was used to smuggle the drug.

Inspector of Anakapalle Town S Vidyasagar told TNIE "We are investigating the case and are looking to nab a few others in connection with the case."

In July this year, Andhra Pradesh government stepped up efforts to curb the smuggling of marijuana in the Visakhapatnam agency area with a massive awareness drive in more than hundred villages.

Mandal-level committees were formed to identify villages where marijuana is cultivated by farmers for money.

The government also added that it will help the farmers and other people involved in various levels of the trade by providing them with alternate employment.

Officials also suspect that a lot of Maoists are involved in cultivation of the plant and use the money gained from its sale, for their activities.

The police has set up CCTV cameras and identified routes via which the marijuana is smuggled to crackdown on it.
