Andhra heatwave: Temperatures hit 47 degrees in parts of the state

As the heatwave alert in Andhra continues to be in place till May 12, parts of the state recorded a temperature of 47 degree Celsius on Thursday. According to data from the AP State Development Planning Society’s automatic weather stations, the temperature hit 47 degrees in Kurichedu Mandal of Prakasam district on Thursday. Apart from parts of Prakasam district, Krishna and West Godavari districts also recorded temperatures above 44 degrees.

In Prakasam district, temperatures hit 46.9 degrees Celsius in Santhanuthlapadu, 46.7 degrees in Tripuranthakam, 46.4 degrees in Chimakurthi and 46.2 degrees in both Kandukur and Rajampalli. In Krishna district’s Tiruvuru Mandal, the temperature rose to 46.7 degrees. In West Godavari district, Pattipadu village saw a maximum temperature of 46.2 degrees; while in Tedepalligudedem’s Jaggannapeta, 46.1 degrees was recorded.

More than 45 locations recorded temperatures between 45 and 46 degrees Celsius, and in 101 locations, it was between 44 and 45 degrees Celsium.

Per Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority’s forecast, similar temperatures are likely to continue, cautioning people to take necessary measures. As of Tuesday, 433 people were believed to have suffered heat stroke, with three people losing their lives.

The IMD had earlier said that heatwave was likely to continue in East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore districts in coastal Andhra Pradesh till May 12. Parts of Chittoor, Kadapa and Kurnool districts in Rayalaseema were also predicted to have similar weather conditions.

After May 12, according to IMD’s forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely at isolated places in Rayalaseema. Light to moderate rain is expected in a few parts of coastal Andhra this week.
