2017 was all about the blockbuster for South Indian cinema, with hits like Mersal and Baahubali 2 ruling the roost. But it wasn’t just the Box Office, social media too caught the film fever, with these films becoming two of the most talked about trends on Twitter.

According to reports, both Mersal and Baahubali 2 featured as two of the most talked about moments of the microblogging site this year.

Mersal, which was also the first Tamil film to get its own emoji, generated “colossal engagement from the fans of South Indian cinema”. The hashtag #Mersal garnered over 1.7 million tweets in just three days, which made it the top hashtag trend in 2017.

Actor Suriya Sivakumar now has to his claim the Golden Tweet too. His tweet, which unveiled the second look for his Tamil film Thaana Serndha Kootam, became the most retweeted tweet in India in 2017.

And it wasn’t just cinema. The Bigg Boss franchise also caught a lot of attention online. Bigg Boss Tamil became another talked about moment of the year thanks to the massive attention that fan favourite Oviya generated online.

Twitterati in India also took to social media to speak about a number of current affairs issues as well. Issues of law and policy such as GST, and Supreme Court’s verdict on Triple Talaq and Dera Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim also found substantial traction on Twitter.

In Tamil Nadu, of course, few other issues generated as much conversation as the protests around jallikattu. With the prominent hashtag of ‘Justice for Jallikattu’, heated discussions around Tamill culture and animal rights, made the bull-taming sport one of the biggest hot-button topics this year.

Indian sport was also in the limelight. With 1.8 million tweets, #INDvPAK in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final, became the most tweeted-about ODI on Twitter. The Mumbai Indians’ win by a single run at the IPL final also created substantial engagement.

Also in the limelight was the hashtag #wwc17 (ICC Women’s World Cup), which became the most popular hashtag in women’s sports in India.
