Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president EVKS Elangovan on Sunday asked Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan to resign if permission to celebrate Jallikattu is not given by the Centre this year.

He said that Pon Radhakrishnan had given assurance to people that the bull-taming sport Jallikattu can be carried out this year.

“Jallikattu is an ancient sport that reflects the culture of the people and the Congress has always insisted that sport should not be banned. The Central Government, which came to power one-and-a-half years back, has failed to fulfil even a single promise,” he said, reported TNIE.

As Pongal festival is nearing, more than 150 bulls have been trained for Jallikattu in Periyar Suriyur and Uthamaseeli villages in Trichy. The resident of these villages told TNIE that it is more than a sport to them and their village deity.

On Sunday, more than 150 members of People’s Welfare Front (PWF) protested in Madurai to lift ban on the Jallikattu sport.
