BJP President Amit Shah has put to rest all speculations as far as the party’s candidate for the 2018 Karnataka assembly polls are concerned, by naming BS Yeddyurappa.

The assembly polls are scheduled to be held in the first half of 2018.

The BJP chief made the announcement in an interaction with news agency PTI on Friday.

The only other probable candidate for the CM’s face was influential Leader of Opposition in the Vidhana Parishad KS Eshwarappa.

Both the factions led by Eshwarappa and Yeddyurappa have been voicing their differences in the open and have been at loggerheads with each other.

Not so long ago, Eshwarappa who had also led a separate faction within the party had hit out at Yeddyurappa for sidelining veteran leaders.

But this announcement is unlikely to cause any ripples within the party, as Eshwarappa had said on May 19 that the party will fight the upcoming 2018 Assembly elections under Yeddyurappa’s leadership.

The leader had also suggested that the party’s top brass would not repeat the “mistake” of talking about internal differences in public.

However, political observers have expressed doubt over BSY being a probable CM face considering the unwritten rule by the party’s current central leadership of making leaders retire from public life after they reach the age of 75.

Former Union Minister Najma Heptulla and ex-Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel were reportedly made to quit from their positions reportedly due to the age factor.

Yeddyurappa, the Lingayat strongman, who spearheaded the BJP's victory in the 2008 elections, resigned as CM following allegations of corruptions against him.

After he was ousted from the party, he had also formed his own party in 2011.

He was welcomed back to the BJP, ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and he proved himself to be an acceptable leader once again among the masses and the party leadership. Now, this announcement will come as a shot in the arm for the Lingayat leader.
