It is a case of perversion, child abuse and rape that has shocked Kerala.

As many as 11 cases have been charged against seven people for abusing and allegedly raping seven students from a Yatheemkahana (orphanage run by a Muslim organisation) in Kalpetta, Wayanad.

The cases have been registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and section 376 of IPC (rape).

Police arrested six accused on Monday.

“The accused are local people who run hotels and shops near the orphanage and their friends. The orphanage authorities lodged a complaint with the police on Saturday morning and we have taken the accused into custody by evening. Their arrest was recorded today,” Mohammed Shafi, DySP Kalppetta told TNM.

The abuse had gone on for two months, according to preliminary investigation.

The victims, all school children, were lured by the accused by offering candies. According to police the incident came to light when the orphanage authorities questioned one of the victims who was seen in a disheveled state near one of the hotels.

The victims are all students of class seven, eighth, ninth and tenth. The police will seek permission from the court for conducting identification parade of the accused.

Meanwhile Kannur Member of Parliament, P K Sreemathi who is also member of Committee on Empowerment of Women visited the girls at the Yatheemkhana or orphanage, on Tuesday morning.

She said that the accused had taken videos and photos of the abuse.

“I went to visit the girls after seeing the reports of the abuse. Seven girls were subjected to sexual harassment and the accused shot photos and videos of the abuse. What happened was heinous,” she told TNM. The MP declined to reveal more details.

A string of cases of child sexual abuse and child rape have been reported from Kerala. A Catholic priest was recently arrested for allegedly raping and impregnating a 15 year old girl in Kannur.

Palakkad witnessed the horrific deaths of two sisters. One of the sisters, according to the police, was sexually abused. Both children committed suicide.
