The Hyderabad Police booked a record 2,499 people for drunken driving during a special drive conducted on New Year’s Eve.

The data released by the police department includes statistics from the three police commissionerates in the city -- Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda.

Out of the total 2,499 cases booked, 1,683 cases were registered by the Hyderabad Traffic Police, followed by 582 cases in Cyberabad. With 234 cases, Rachakonda saw the least number of violations.

In a press release, the police said that special drives had been conducted at Begumpet, SR Nagar, Punjagutta, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Marredpally, Trimulgherry, Abids and Narayanaguda among other areas.

Around 22,540 vehicles were checked under the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad police alone.

According to reports, cops even seized 1,309 two-wheelers and booked cases against the riders.

“Some revellers hired auto-rickshaws from pubs and bars instead of waiting for cabs. When we gave breath analyser test, most of the auto-rickshaw drivers themselves turned to be drunk. We seized 86 auto-rickshaws and booked cases against them,” an official was quoted as saying.

The police had earlier said that a special drive would be conducted on December 31, starting from 10 pm and continuing till 5 am.

The police also said that those who are caught driving while drunk, may even be sent to jail at the Chanchalguda Prison for a period between one and 15 days.

Officials said that those who are caught for the first time, will have their vehicles seized, and pay a penalty, while repeat offenders will undergo imprisonment.

The permissible alcohol limit is 30 mg/100 ml of blood, i.e., 30 micrograms/100 ml of blood. Anything above that, as recorded by a breath analyser, would be considered drunken driving.

Last year, in a special drive during the night of December 31, as many as 957 drunk drivers were arrested or detained, while a staggering 1,594 drunk driving cases were booked by the three commissionerates in the city.
