Leading e-commerce website Flipkart was duped of over Rs 20 lakh by a Hyderabad man who returned fake items after complaining to the company that the goods were poor in quality.

The 32-year-old, identified as Veera Swamy, lived in the Vanasthalipuram area of the city and allegedly booked orders for valuable electronic items in the name of mother, father, wife, brothers and other known people in the neighbourhood, a report in Bangalore Mirror adds.

Once the items were delivered, he would swap the original item with a fake item and call up the call centre complaining that the goods delivered were of poor quality.

The company sends representatives to pick any poor quality goods, and Veera would send back the fake item, writing the model number and item code as received.

Veera also reportedly created fake email IDs and made bank payments through different accounts, so that the money would be refunded to his various accounts.

"Veera Reddy received more than 250 products from Filpkart by placing orders online in the names of his mother, wife and brother by creating email IDs. He allegedly duped the firm of 20 lakh," police told The New Indian Express.

The police are in talks with the management and cases will be registered soon.
