In a double-tragedy, two sisters who reportedly feared pressure from parents to get married, committed suicide by hanging themselves from the same saree in the early hours of Tuesday in Bengaluru.
The girls, Tejaswini (22)and Ranjitha(20), who were pursuing engineering at MVJ College of Engineering near Whitefield, committed suicide near their home in Balaji Layout in Hoggasandra area, following a heated argument with their father, reported Deccan Herald.
According to newspaper reports, it started when Tejaswini, who was reportedly in love with a boy from a different caste, was approached by her father Malleshappa to marry a man he had chosen. Tejaswini’s younger sister Ranjitha too confessed that she too was in love with someone. However, Malleshappa disapproved of their choice of men.
DH reported that during the argument Malleshappa asked the girls to bring the boys they were in a relationship to the local police station where they could get married immediately. The argument reportedly went on till late in the night.
Malleshappa woke up at 3:30AM to check on his daughters only to find them hanging from the ceiling fan. The girls left a suicide note addressed to the parents. They thanked their parents for taking care of them all these years and said that nobody was responsible for their death. They girls were reportedly sorry for having taken the extreme step, reported TOI.
The bodies have been sent to St. John’s hospital for the post-mortem and a case of unnatural death has been registered at Madiwala police station.
