Haveri district police on Monday arrested 27 people from Hindu and Muslim communities following a communal clash between them.

According to the district superintendent of police, Shashikumar, about 50 people belonging to Hindu and Muslim community had a fight between each other.

According to the complaint given by one of the men belonging to a Hindu community, some Muslim men came and abused them while they were playing cricket on Monday evening. Since the Hindus in the ground outnumbered the Muslims, the Muslims left to get more people for support. Meanwhile there was a rumour that a Hindu man had been stabbed, said Shashikumar.

"People from both communities assembled near Kanaka circle at around 8:30 pm. There was stone pelting. The complaint also said that there were instruments like iron rods that were used too. In about half an hour's time a crowd of over 1000 people had gathered. Police intervened before anything untoward could happen," said Shashikumar.

However, Shashikumar says that on 35-year old man named Ramesh had an injury which he claimed to be a stab injury by a Muslim man.

“Isolated instances of clashes keep happening the district every now and then but not regularly. This is the first such incident with such a large number of people have gathered,” he said.

He said that none of the people involved in the clash had any political allegiance.
