Many stars from film industries across the country have congratulated PM Narendra Modi on the demonetisation move. However, public anger about its execution is growing by the day, with long queues at ATMs that eventually run out of cash. Questions on how effective the move will be in catching the big fish are also being asked.
Tollywood superstar Nagarjuna Akkineni had tweeted his enthusiasm for demonetisation on November 9.
He received a reply from the PM's Twitter handle on the same day.
Dear @iamnagarjuna, this step will check corruption, black money and fake currency rackets that slow our progress. https://t.co/qns6cyosAB

However, a Twitter user accused Nagarjuna of not repaying bank loans taken for Annapurna Studios which is owned by the actor. The user shared the link of a 2015 news report which said the actor owed Rs 32.3 crores to Andhra Bank and Rs 29.7 crore to Indian Bank.
@iamnagarjuna seriously sir?? We tax payers ?? you were defaulter for one of the banks for Annapurna studios.

@suneethmbbs yes indeed there is proof of he being defaulter. Why should you negotiate with banks for a deal when bloody you can pay money.

An argument broke out, with fans of the actor defending him. However, Nagarjuna tweeted on Thursday that the loans had been cleared earlier this year.
It is true we took a loan frm banks to build new film facilities at annapurna studios earlier.ALL LOANS HAVE BEEN CLEARED EARLIER THIS YEAR.
— Nagarjuna Akkineni (@iamnagarjuna) November 17, 2016
For the few who may believe so neither me nor annapurna studios owe any money to any banks!!FYI
— Nagarjuna Akkineni (@iamnagarjuna) November 17, 2016
While some lauded the actor for clearing the air, others pointed out that this meant he had indeed been a loan defaulter.
@iamnagarjuna sir this is completely your personal issues, you no need to explain anybody. Some people want to damage your image but....

@iamnagarjuna Taking loan for productive purpose should be done and not a sin. I don't think you need to explain anyone Nag. You are honest
