Writer Mahmood Farooqui arrested on charges of rape

Writer and historian Mahmood Farooqui has been arrested by the Delhi Police on Sunday after charges of rape had been filed against him. According to reports, the charges were filed by a woman from the US in the New Friends Colony Police Station in New Delhi. Farooqui has reportedly been sent to judicial custody for six days. Reports mention that the woman has alleged that Farooqui raped her in the Sukhdev Vihar area of Delhi on the 19th of this month. Reportedly, an FIR was registered on the same day and Farooqui was arrested. Farooqui is known for being a proponent of a style of Urdu-storytelling known as Dastangoi . The art-form originated in the 16th century and was revived around 2005. Farooqui is also the husband of former journalist and film-director Anusha Rizvi, and had co-directed her debut film "Peepli Live" with her.
