After a lot of hype over the release of its first look at the Cannes International Film Festival recently, Sangamithra suffered a setback with its female lead opting out. Within minutes of the announcement from Sri Thenandal Films on Twitter that Shruti Haasan wouldn’t be a part of the project, the actor came out with a press statement explaining why she opted out.

The press statement from her spokesperson read, “Shruti has, unfortunately, had to take a call not to be part of ‘Sangamithra’. Knowing it was a massive undertaking and a long commitment spanning over 2 years, she knew the importance of her training, a comprehensive script and proper date calendar. She hired and started training with one of the best combat trainers from April onwards to make sure she was ready in time for a shoot. Despite her enthusiasm and commitment to ‘Sangamithra’, she has had to give the film a miss since she had not received a proper bound script or a proper date calendar. She is currently caught up with promoting her Hindi film ‘Behen Hogi Teri’, prep for Sabash Naidu and her musical associations.”

Sangamithra is a magnum opus to be made on a high budget. While Sundar C will be donning the director’s robes for this period film, it is being bankrolled by Sri Thenandal Films. The film also has Jayam Ravi and Arya playing important roles. Oscar winning music director AR Rahman will be composing the tunes and Sabu Cyril erecting the sets for this historical extravaganza. Sangamithra, apparently, is about a warrior princess. With Shruti opting out, the filmmakers are scouting for a suitable heroine to replace her.

Meanwhile, Shruti is busy promoting her upcoming Hindi release Behen Hogi Teri and is looking forward to joining the sets of Sabaash Naidu.
