The News Minute| July 23, 2014| 3.34 pm IST14 years ago, on February 13, 1997, a ship called the Tokyo Express was enroute to New York when it was hit by a massive wave. The impact of the wave dashing against the ship was such that it washed 62 containers overboard. And around 5 million Lego pieces fell into the sea.Over the years, washed up Lego pieces have been found regularly on the shores of Cornwall in England and some other beached nearby.Surprisingly most of the Lego pieces that the Tokyo Express lost to the sea were sea themed- lego octopuses, sea grasses, scuba diving apparatus, and even dragons.Close up of the Lego scuba tank (bottom left) that washed up among the tide of plastic on a beach north of Newquay in October 2013.Tracey Williams, a British writer and beachcomber, created a Facebook page last year called ‘Lego Lost at Sea’. Her family and she started discovering the Lego pieces in the late 1990s in the beach near their home in South Devon, England. The page includes images of the Lego pieces that William’s has collected over the years from the beaches. People from around the world also post images of possible such discoveries. These Lego dragons washed up in Bigbury on Sea, South Devon, England in the late 1990s. They were among 33,941 dragons that were in the container of Lego that fell off the Tokio Express in 1997.“Most people find the Lego during beach cleans. On one beach clean recently we found 40 Lego pieces in one tiny cove. Everybody loves finding the dragons so whenever anyone finds one there's always a bit of dragon envy!” said Williams to The News Minute through an email.A Lego piece is also said to have been discovered in a beach in Australia recently. While collecting washed up Lego pieces on the beach is likely to be a fun activity, however, it seems to be a concern for environmentalist as plastic is one of the major source of pollution worldwide. (All images courtesy: Tracey Williams/LegoLostAtSea )
