Calicut has one more speciality that the locals are proud of- The Calicut Paragon Restaurant. It now looks like the Calicut Paragon Hotel group wants to keep the name “Calicut”, all to themselves.In Dubai, a legal battle is on; a case has been filed by the Calicut Paragon Hotel, against other hotels using either Calicut or Paragon in their names.The Calicut Paragon Hotels owner PC Sumesh has already sent notices to many hotels in Dubai who have either “Calicut” or “Paragon” in their names. The notice asks them to give an explanation within 20 days, failing which they will be sued to pay a fine of 10, 00000 dirhams.The notice has been sent on the behalf of Paragon group by a leading legal consultancy in Dubai, Al-Tameemi and Co. In the notice Paragon also demands that the names of all hotels which use either “Calicut” or “Paragon” should be changed with immediate effect. The Economics Department in Dubai, the government body that issues licenses to commercial establishments are also preparing to take action against these restaurants, reports say.Reports say that the group’s notice is mainly intended at hotels like Calicut Notebook and Calicut Sawariya which started recently, but is gaining much attention from customers. These hotels have also received a notice.The group says that since both the names – Calicut and Paragon have been registered as a trade name two years ago under the UAE Federal Trademark Law of 1992 before; no other business ventures can use this name. It adds that the group has also has registered their trade mark name even outside of UAE, in other gulf countries like Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.
