IAF's Mirage-2000 landing on the Yamuna Expressway (Courtesy PIB)In a first, the Indian Air Force successfully landed a Mirage-2000 on the Yamuna Expressway near Mathura today at 6:40am. The exercise was conducted as part of IAF trials to use national highways as emergency landing for fighter aircrafts.IAF issued a statement stating, “The aircraft made a practice approach on the highway, coming down to a height of 100 metres before landing off the next approach. The operations were conducted with active support from the government of Uttar Pradesh, Yamuna Expressway Authority, toll authorities of JP Infratech and the civil police."The Hindustan Times reports that IAF was also in talks with the government to convert the nearly 3km stretch into a road runway for which it will bear the cost of the project. The road runway segment will not have electricity poles, masts or mobile phone towers and will be equipped with ground lighting systems.This is the first for India but countries like China, Pakistan, Sweden, Germany and Singapore also have road runways.
