The official trailer of Suriya-Mohanlal starrer Kaappaan was released on Wednesday. The film will hit the screens on September 20.

When the trailer begins, we watch as Suriya’s character appears in different looks - an undercover agent, a wounded person, a farmer and probably a bureaucrat. Sayyeeshaa appears a few times in the trailer and is seen dancing in most of the shots. Mohanlal’s character as the Prime Minister predictably talks about the glory and sacrifice of being a soldier.

Songs set to typical Harris Jayaraj style music have been shot in some exotic locations and Suriya doubles between twirling Sayyeeshaa and shooting bad people down. There’s also a peppy number where Suriya’s character dances in a scenic village. In the end, Mohanlal’s character says a paraphrased version of Nayakan’s ‘naalu peruku naladhu nadakanum na edhuvume thappila’ dialogue.

Actor Arya, who allegedly plays the PM’s son in this film makes a very brief appearance in the trailer.

The film has been scripted jointly by director KV Anand and veteran writer Pattukottai Prabhakar with the former directing it. Kaapaan is being bankrolled by A Subashkaran on a huge budget under his banner Lyca Productions.

Abhinandan Ramanujam has been roped in as the cinematographer and the editing has been done by Anthony. It may be mentioned here that MS Prabhu had worked as the cinematographer for the first schedule but he had to opt out for various reasons and be replaced by Abhinandan Ramanujam.

The film recently ran into a controversy when John Charles, a film writer, filed a petition at the Madras HC claiming that director KV Anand’s Kaappaan is based on his story ‘Saravedi’. John alleged that he had narrated the story to director KV Anand during the first week of January 2017 and that he has been waiting for a response since. Having watched the teaser on August 2 this year, John claims that he was surprised by the story’s similarity to his own. The case was again heard on September 4.
