Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was shot dead in Ankara on Monday by an unidentified gunman.

Karlov was in the midst of his speech at a painting exhibition in the Turkish capital, when the gunman yelled "Allahu Akbar!" and fired the shots that killed Karlov, reported CNN. Karlov had beeen envoy since July 2013.

The Russian embassy said it believed that the killing was a radical Islamist attack.

In footage of the incident, the gunman can be see raising his gun in the air after shooting Karlov, and shouting. "Don't forget Aleppo. Don't forget Syria. As long as our lands are insecure, you will not taste security," he yells to panicked spectators.

He also says that all those who have had a role to play in this "injustice" will pay "one by one". 

Responding to the attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the killing was aimed at souring relations between Russia and Turkey. Incidentally, it also happened a day before Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was to go to Moscow for talks on Syria with his Russian and Iranian counterparts.

The killing was condemned by the US and the United Nations both, with the UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon calling it a "senseless" act of terror.
