2017 was a good year for Varalaxmi Sarathkumar with notable performances in films such as Vikram Vedha, Nibunan and Sathya. In Sibiraj’s Sathya, the Tamil remake of Kshanam, she didn’t hesitate to play a negative character.

With big-ticket films such as Sandakozhi 2, Maari 2 and Thalapathy 62 in her kitty this year, she has signed a thriller titled Velvet Nagaram, in which she plays a reporter from Madurai. The film is said to be based on true-life incidents that took place in Kodaikanal and Chennai.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, director Manoj kumar Natrajan said, “The story revolves around the heroine and a performance oriented character. Varalaxmi portrays the central character that comes to the city to investigate the atrocities meted out to adivasis belonging to Kodaikanal. The subsequent predicament she faces and how intelligently the truth is revealed form the crux.”

The story is set to happen within 48 hours, he added.

If the industry grapevine is anything to go by, Varalaxmi plays negative characters in Sandakozhi 2 and Thalapathy 62. Last month, it was announced that she plays a crucial role in A.R Murugadoss directed Vijay starrer. She took to Twitter and said: “It’s the best birthday gift I can ask for. It is official I’m joining the cast of Thalapathy 62. Super excited to be working with Vijay sir and A.R Murugadoss sir.”

In Linguswamy’s Sandakozhi 2, she’s believed to lock horns with Vishal. Apparently, she was signed for the project even before she played a dirty cop in Sathya, which earned praise for her performance from all quarters.
