Alleged medical negligence claimed the life of a four-year-old boy in Hyderabad's Prathima Hospital on Wednesday, after his Tonsillitis operation reportedly failed.

Claiming that it was a case of medical negligence by doctors, the boy's parents and relatives staged a protest outside the hospital and demanded justice. They also filed a complaint at the Kachiguda police station.

Sub-Inspector Laxmaiah of the Kachiguda police station told ANI, "The parents of the boy lodged a complaint, stating that their son, Manivardhan Yadav, was admitted at the Prathima Hospital ten days ago as he was suffering from Tonsils problem. The parents alleged that the doctors at the hospital suggested for Tonsillitis operation. After the operation, Manivardhan's condition deteriorated rapidly and he became very critical. In the wee hours of Wednesday, the hospital declared him dead".

Speaking to reporters, the boy's father, K Venkatesh Yadav, alleged that the family was not informed about what was happening, adding, "They brought him on the ventilator after four hours of the surgery and that was shocking. We didn’t understand what went wrong. It was supposed to be a simple operation of tonsils."

However, the hospital management denied the allegations and said that the patient had suffered Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy after surgery. This occurs during recovery from anaesthesia and there is a lack of oxygen to the brain, which is why the boy needed to be put on ventilator after surgery, the hospital said.

“It is a rare complication and was not expected. There were no lapses in the surgical treatment that was offered to the child. An autopsy has been conducted to establish what exactly caused death,” the hospital said in a statement.

The body was sent for a post-morterm and was later handed over to the family members.

The family resides in Hyderabad’s Karwan area and has demanded that appropriate legal action must be taken against the hospital for their son’s death.
