A TV viewer wakes up to his morning tea/coffee on a Sunday, hoping to find programming on the lines of a car and bike show, the review of the latest gadget, or a food trip across Europe. On June 14, they woke up to a belligerent Arnab Goswami on Times Now, demanding for the resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. The channel put out a series of leaked emails which trailed back to former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, who is under the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) scanner. Goswami called for Swaraj’s head, accusing her of aiding a fugitive from the law. On her part, Swaraj tweeted that her decision was taken citing a “humanitarian view”.While Times Now questioned the ethics of her actions though, a battle on media-ethics was playing out away from the din of newsrooms on Twitter. And as Times Now questioned Swaraj’s propriety, its own modesty was being questioned. The channel laid claim to the “exclusive newsbreak” while several journalists from the India Today group first took to social media to remind Times Now that the story had been reported first by the Sunday Times in the UK.When I first visited Fox News in U.S. I thanked my stars that India didn't have such crazies. Arnab makes Fox look like a sensible channel. — Rahul Kanwal (@rahulkanwal) June 14, 2015Keith Vaz-Modi was first broken by @thesundaytimes When a channel claims they broke the Sushma story it's a blatant lie. Fooling viewers. — Rahul Kanwal (@rahulkanwal) June 14, 2015.@TimesNow was displaced from its perch as No 1 channel by @IndiaToday last week. Desperate tactics to reclaim position by hook or crook? — Rahul Kanwal (@rahulkanwal) June 14, 2015Sunday is when new rating week starts By blowing week old story out of proportion is a desperate @TimesNow trying to bolster falling ratings — Rahul Kanwal (@rahulkanwal) June 14, 2015A story broken by Sunday Times of London and Indian news channels take credit? Surely, we have lost our moral compass again!! — Rajdeep Sardesai (@sardesairajdeep) June 14, 2015Sources within Times Now though maintain that they had 'broken' the first story about British Keith Vaz trying to bail out Lalit Modi on June 7 itself. Video here. The channel also said that they had the emails much before everyone else, but were waiting for Sushma Swaraj's reply before going ahead with it. This was the message that was apparently sent by the channel to the External Affairs Minister.Later, the controversy shifted to the channel's decision to take up 'Sushma Quit' as a campaign.Reporting all dimensions of a story, asking tough questions our job. To run a campaign against @SushmaSwaraj as one channel doing suspicious — barkha dutt (@BDUTT) June 15, 2015'The story has been fed for a purpose. Either for intra-party or inter-party politics. It's a hatchet job.' ~ @KanchanGupta on @IndiaToday. — Shiv Aroor (@ShivAroor) June 14, 2015Hullo @TimesNow “@SushmaSwaraj: In July 2014 Lalit Modi spoke to me that his wife was suffering from Cancer (cont) http://t.co/d4dN5Qh72k” — Kanchan Gupta (@KanchanGupta) June 14, 2015Cong asks of BJP how come you asked for Tharoor's resignation on IPL, why not EAM now? Jab jab IPL ka naam uthega Tharoor tera naam uthega — Smita Prakash (@smitaprakash) June 14, 2015when journos speak nonsense. sushma story may be result of BJP vendetta, so? many major breaks start so, issue's whether story stands or not — Hartosh Singh Bal (@HartoshSinghBal) June 15, 2015BJP demanded resignation of UPA ministers when they were found on wrong foot. Now both party n govt defend @SushmaSwaraj ! — nikhil wagle (@waglenikhil) June 15, 2015
