The U-certificate with which Surya’s action-packed movie Anjaan is currently running in theatres was bought through bribery, said the CBI after it arrested the CEO of the Central Board of Film Certicate (CBFC) , Rakesh Kumar on Friday.

Kumar was arrested on suspicion that he demanded bribes during film screenings to issue censor certificates, threatening to make cuts if demands weren’t met.

"We suspect that other than taking bribe for censor certificates, Kumar was also taking money during the screening process by threatening to cut certain parts if he was not paid," a CBI officer told IBNLive.

The bribe taken during the screening process would have been bigger than that demanded for the final certificate, the officer added.

The movie Anjaan which includes a lot of violence was submitted for certification on July 24, and the certificate was issued on August 5. He has taken a laptop and an Ipad among other things to provide a U-certificate for this movie, said the CBI.

Bribes were also taken for issuing certificates to the Telugu version of the movie ‘Sikander’, said the CBI. Others arrested include censor board agent Shripati Mishra and member of the advisory panel of CBFC Sarvesh Jaiswal. The court extended CBI custody of Kumar until August 28th.
