In an incident that has come as a shock to the people of Wayanad district, bodies of a man and woman were found on Friday, shattered from an explosion, at the Naykkatti area near Sulthan Bathery in the district. The police suspect that the man had walked into the house of his family friend, detonated the bomb on himself, killing him and the woman in the house.

Speaking to TNM, an official at the Sulthan Bathery police station identified the deceased as 43-year-old Benny, a native of Moolankavu of Wayanad district and 36-year-old Amala, a native of Naykkatti in the district.

“The incident took place around 1:30 pm on Friday when Benny came over to Amala’s house in Naykkatti carrying a country bomb,” said the police official. From the preliminary investigations, the police official said that they suspect this as a case of suicide attack. “But we cannot confirm it now.”

Sulthan Bathery police has registered a case regarding the incident and has begun investigations.

According to media reports, Amala was married to a man named Nasar, a native of Naykatti but was in a relationship with Benny. When TNM enquired about this to the Sulthan Bathery police, the police official said that it has not been confirmed that the duo were having an affair. “We need more time to get to the depth of the case, so right now we do not want to comment about their relationship and the reason behind the explosion as all of that is part of the investigation that is going on,” said the police official at the Sulthan Bathery police station.

The incident took place when Nasar had gone to a nearby mosque to offer Friday prayers. When the explosion took place, the bodies of both Benny and Amala were reported to have scattered into pieces because of the impact. Amala’s six-year-old daughter was also present inside the house, but managed to escape unhurt. The couple's two other children had been away at the time of the incident.
