A french satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has been attacked by gunmen, in which 12 people have died and seven injured.

Videos showed masked gunmen opening fire on police on the streets of Paris before escaping.

While French President Hollande called the act a terrorist attack of “exeptional barbarity”, many have condemned the attack, reported BBC.

Why has the attack happened?

The Charlie Hebdo magazine is not new to controversy or attacks.

In the past, it has been under criticism after it published cartoons of Prophet Mohammed .The offices were fire-bombed in November 2011, reported Reuters.

The magazine also published a comic book retelling the life of the Prophet which many found offensive.
