Less than a month ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission  allotted the 'cycle' symbol to the Samajwadi Party faction led by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday.

The decision is a major blow to the rival faction led by party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav who had been desperate to hold on to the symbol which he picked long ago.

The announcement was first made by Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav, who urged the people of Uttar Pradesh to vote Akhilesh Yadav back to power in the coming assembly election.

"This is a just decision," a beaming Ram Gopal Yadav, who is also a Rajya Sabha member, told the media. "The Election Commission will get the blessings of crores of people in Uttar Pradesh."

An Election Commission official confirmed the development, saying: "The group led by Akhilesh Yadav is the Samajwadi Party and is entitled to use the 'cycle' symbol."

This announcement comes after several days of contest between the two factions tried to prove their claim to the party symbol.

Earlier on Monday, party patriarch Mulayam Singh said that he was ready to contest against his son if attempts to keep the party united fail.

Mulayam Singh Yadav made the remarks during a visit to the party office where he interacted with party members including state SP chief Naresh Uttam.

Uttam had been appointed state party chief by the faction led by Akhilesh Yadav.

Uttar Pradesh will go for seven-phased election from Feb 11 for 403 seats.
