In a shocking incident, a class IX student studying in a government school in Hyderabad's Madhapur, delivered a baby girl in her school washroom on Saturday.

The incident came to light on Monday when the girl's parents lodged a police complaint.

According to a report in the Times of India, the 15-year-old was in class and went to the toilet when her labour pains kicked in and delivered a baby. Another girl, who heard screams from the bathroom, alerted the teachers, who were shocked at what they saw and called the girl's parents.

The girl's family alleged that their neighbour was responsible for the pregnancy. However, what has left many officials and the police puzzled is that 20 teachers have claimed that they had not noticed the pregnancy for nine months even though she was regular to school.

"She is very slim and would walk with a dupatta on her stomach and she would sit with her bag on her lap, so we didn't know," the girl's teacher told NDTV. The report also adds that the teen's friends said she had been very aloof of late and refused to come out to play.

Later reports added that the student is the daughter of a visually-challenged widower, who runs a grocery store at Chandranayak tanda in Madhapur. She has two elder sisters, who are already married and a four-year-old younger sister.

The Madhapur police have since registered a case of rape against the girl's neighbour and some of the teachers have been served notices demanding a written explanation.

Reports also add that Ranga Reddy district education officer G Ramesh has suspended the headmaster on orders from the regional joint director of school education (Hyderabad) Krishna Rao. The State Council for Protection of Child Rights also took up a suo motu case and  directed the education and woman & child welfare departments to submit report by December 15.

At the time of writing, the offender is absconding.
