The News Minute | April 7, 2015 | 12:20 p.m. ISTThe Shiv Sena has criticised the Modi government via an editorial in their newspaper Saamna for not keeping his MPs under check. The article comes in the wake of the controversial statement made by Dilip Gandhi on tobacco consumption.According to a report in The Indian Express the editorial went on to say that Gandhi deserved a Nobel Prize for his “astounding discovery” that tobacco aids digestion. The MP had earlier said that there were no Indian studies to establish a connection between tobacco and cancer.Gandhi was head of a Parliamentary Panel on subordinate legislation which had deferred a government’s notification which required for pictorial warnings on cigarette packets to cover 85% of the packet area from April 1.“Prime Minister Modi has picked up the broom to clean up streets, but how will he clean up the mouths of his leaders who are spreading dirt through their speech?” the article stated. The article also went on to mention the names of MPs who had spoken out of turn according to them, after Modi had reportedly asked members to refrain from interacting with the media. “Among these are leaders like Sadhvi Prachi, Giriraj Singh and now the honour is claimed by Ahmednagar MP Dilip Gandhi”, read the piece.Gandhi in a function at his constituency earlier had also said that tobacco aids digestion. The piece also went on to cite examples of leaders like Sharad Pawar and RR Patil of those who had suffered due to its consumption.
