Director Shankar reportedly began the groundwork for Indian 2 a few weeks ago and it is progressing rapidly. The maverick director is yet to wrap up the magnum opus 2.0, which has Rajinikanth in the lead role. The film was supposed to hit the silver screens in April this year but it now stands postponed due to post production delays. With the release date pushed to August, director Shankar had now moved over to his next project.

As announced earlier, Shankar’s next will be a sequel to Indian, a social drama that hit the silver screens in 1996. The film had Kamal Haasan essaying dual roles – father and son – and had a bevy of actors in the star cast including Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Sukanya, Kasturi, Goundamanim Senthil etc.

While Kamal Haasan will be a part of the project in the sequel as well, we hear that the director is keen on roping in Bollywood star Ajay Devgn to play an important role in it. Apparently, he had a discussion with the star but the deal is yet to be signed. With the shooting yet to commence, we can expect the star to join the star cast with Kamal Haasan.

The latest update is also that Nayanthara is in talks to be play the leading lady in the film. If signed for the project, this will be her first outing with Haasan

It is worth mentioning here that Shankar’s 2.0 will feature Bollywood star Askhay Kumar as the lead villain. AR Rahman had composed the tunes for Indian way back in 1996 and all the songs in the album were chartbusters. While A.R Rahman was originally speculated as the composer, latest reports hint that Anirudh Ravichander is mostly likely to be brought on board.

Indian 2, to be bankrolled by Lyca Productions, was launched in Taiwan a few weeks ago where the story discussion had begun. Reports are that Kamal Haasan is currently busy with his newly launched party and will be joining the sets later this year.
