The News Minute | January 9, 2015 | 10:00 am ISTThe Supreme Court on Friday is going to hear a petition seeking stay on a recent order by the AP High Court to ban traditional cock fight games during the Sankranti festival as it violated the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.The petition was filed by some people of the region including a social worker, The bench is headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu.According to a report in the Deccan Chronicle, the petitioners justified cock fights by claiming they were part of tradition and culture, without which the festival would lose its significance.The petitioners further added that if the traditional cock fight were stopped, then a special breed of cocks fed and brought up for the purpose would "collapse" and this would not be in the interest of the environment.Tweet
