The latest episode of 'Game of Thrones' was undoubtedly the most distressing in season 6. A character, with little back story, was killed in George RR Martin fashion. But the reason fans paid tribute to Hodor on social media was because his end also provided an explanation for his name - the only word he utters in the TV series.
As time is manipulated where past meets present meets future , Hodor, whose real name is Wylis - a fact discovered in a recent episode, 'holds the door' separating Bran from the White walkers. 'Hodor' is his final act as he sacrifices his life for, what one hopes is, the greater good.
#Hodor was trending on social media. Here's how twitterati reacted to the hero's death:
Ive not cared this much about a character that only says one word since Pikachu refused to evolve into Raichu #gamesofthrones #hodor
