The News Minute| February 3, 2015| 1.30 pm ISTHoping to bring all controversies surrounding his new music band 'Lalisom' to rest, actor Mohanlal wrote a short note explaining recent events and controversies at the National Games.The actor has been criticized on two counts- for taking a large sum from the government for his band’s debut and for the band’s dismal performance.Saying that the amount of Rs. 1,63,77,000, the fee collected was only to pay the band to perform at the Games, Mohanlal has declared that he would return it back to the government. While the star and his band have been publicly ridiculed, many fans have expressed their support for him. Here is a translation of his note in Malayalam:"I am writing this note with the clear understanding that it is the love, care and prayer of each Malayali that has sustained me as myself for the last 36 years.After a big break, when Kerala was hosting the National Games, respected Chief Minister and Sports minister requested my full co-operation and presence.In the last moment, when a large musical show that was being planned was about to get cancelled, the organizers approached me asking if I could perform at the National Games with my musical band Lalisom, which I have been nurturing closely.Since I have happily co-operated with all such government programmes, I agreed to perform a simplified version of Lalisom, avoiding the technical complications.Along with that I agreed to perform in a show paying tribute to freedom fighter Kunjali Marakkar. My decision was to mark my humble obligation to this great sporting event by taking part in both the programmes without charging any fee.But the artists taking part in the show and the crew that works behind the scenes day and night have to be paid. The amount calculated by the producers of the event for each division was Rs 1,60,000, and that amount was taken from the government.I am attaching a note showing how much of that money has been spent till now.I have been watching, hearing and understanding the controversies and criticisms that has risen from the night Lalisom performed, till now.Over the years I have matured as an actor through the loud applause, compliments and loving rebukes from Keralites. But unlike that, the arrows laden with allegations that was aimed at me by at least some of you has saddened me.The easy and irresponsible manner in which an event done with pure intentions was defiled has hurt me. I have no complaints or hard feelings towards all those who have been belittling the sincerity and hard work I have put in the last three weeks preparing for this event and those who are saying that I took government’s money illegally.But I am insistent that my fans who have smothered me with love, should not have an inkling of doubt about me in their minds.My name that has an identity only as an artist need not be dragged into controversies or late night discussions (tv shows) anymore.I am giving back the full amount of Rs 1,63,77,000 to the government.
