Home minister Rajnath Singh has sought an explanation from the director general of CRPF after the relatives of a jawan, who drowned in a water tank in Chattisgarh,

denied to receive his body, alleging disrespect.

The body of Anil Achankunju (33), who drowned on Thursday, was reportedly decomposed as it was not embalmed.

Relatives have alleged that the body was brought home wrapped in a plastic cover.

When the body was brought home, the relatives blocked the National highway in protest. Later, only after CRPF's commanding officer Sanjay Sharma promised an investigation, they received the Jawan’s body.

Sharma also met the state Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and Alappuzha MP KC Venugopal.

Anil’s funeral was later held in St Thomas Orthodox Church Karthikapally near his house around 11am.

“Anil was serving in a Maoist-affected area. CRPF officials tried to send the body as soon as possible as there were chances of an attack. However, we feel that CRPF did not do a good job and we have sent a report (to CRPF) demanding action against erring officials,“ one of his relative Jose told The Times of India.

“We also learnt that the body was kept at Mumbai airport for over 15 hours,“ he added.
