The highly anticipated superstar Rajinikanth starrer 2.0, a sequel to his own Enthiran, is gearing up for release during Republic Day weekend next year. The film, being bankrolled on a budget of over Rs 400 crore, was originally planned to hit the screens this Diwali. However, due to the extensive visual effects work, the makers decided to postpone the release. Another reason being cited is that they didn’t want competition with any other big-ticket film at the box-office. On Monday, rumours started doing the rounds that the film has been postponed once again.

According to reports, the film’s release was moved from January as Akshay Kumar’s Pad Man is being planned to be released around the same time. When the makers were notified of the rumours, they quickly intervened to put to rest the reports. They have confirmed that the film will hit the screens as planned earlier on January 26 and there will be no further postponement.

Last month, a representative of Lyca had said that the company is hopeful of converting as many screens into 3D for the release of 2.0, which has been shot in 3D format. At the event, it was mentioned that there are only 1500 3D screens in India as opposed to over 5000 in China. He had said they hope to have 300 3D screens in Tamil Nadu alone for the film’s release.

The film marks the third collaboration of Shankar and Rajinikanth post Enthiran and Sivaji. To be released in Telugu and Hindi, the film also stars Akshay Kumar as the antagonist, apart from Amy Jackson, Adil Hussain and Sudhanshu Pandey. The film’s satellite rights across all languages were bagged by Zee Network for a whopping Rs 100 crore, making it the highest amount paid for an Indian film.
