Filmmaker Rajamouli, who loves to experiment with the aid of technology, has set his eyes on Virtual Reality, the technology which aids in creating three dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with, in a seemingly real or physical way.

During his recent trip to Cannes, the Yamadonga director revealed that he’s so fascinated by the technology that he plans to make another part in the Baahubali franchise exclusively for VR platform and he plans to release it even before Baahubali 2 hits the screens.

Talking to film critic Anupama Chopra, he revealed that he first experienced VR about two years ago. Instantly in awe of the technology, he asked himself how one could make a film using the medium which is the future. As he kept reading and researching more about the technology, he understood the only way to fully realize the potential of VR is by making a film using it. It was this thought that led to the idea of making Baahubali exclusively for VR, and this film will have a different story-line and feature some of the characters from the film.

Asked why he’d like to make a film using VR, Rajamouli said the scale that the technology offers him, to make his larger-than-life stories and characters come alive, is nothing close to what he can achieve using the film medium. He also said the immersive feature of VR is unique and it can take a viewer right into the action unlike a theatre where one can only create the sense of action. Rajamouli also clarified that VR is just an alternate medium to experience cinema and it won’t replace the theatrical experience.
