The police have arrested a minor and his accomplice Janmejay Barik in connection with the suicide of a minor girl, allegedly over the circulation of an MMS clip showing the girl the accused minor in a sexual act.The accused were arrested from Purushottam Express at Cuttack Railway Station in Orissa, according to an Indian Express report. They have been booked under Sections 376, 306 of the IPC, Sections 4 and 12 of POCSO Act and Section 66 and 67 of IT Act, 2008.Suryakanta Ray, Sub divisional police officer told The Indian Express, “The accused and the victim were in love for one-and-a-half years.” However, the victim’s father has alleged that the accused forced her into a sexual relationship.The minor told the police that he had recorded the sexual act and that Barik had transferred the video clip to his own mobile phone, without informing him. Barik then sold the clip to two people, who are currently absconding, for Rs. 500. He claims that one of them uploaded the video on Facebook.The village elders had decided that the accused minor should marry the victim, but he refused. Fearing social alienation, the 16- year old victim consumed poison on Wednesday night.Recently, many such video clips of women being sexually exploited originating in Odisha have been circulated on the internet. The CBI has been investigating these cases, and last month, a Bhubaneshwar based builder and his friend were arrested on charges of sexually exploiting a girl and filming it.
