Pakistan’s government has approved a ban on pillion-riding in Karachi, Pakistani daily Dawn reported.
According to the report, the Sindh government put in place the nine-day ban on the advice of the city police, in a bid to curtail sectarian killings.
According to a report on preliminary investigation into recent killings, a motorcycle was the preferred mode of transport prompting the Karachi police to seek such a ban.
Dawn quoted other government officials as saying that the ban was temporary because it would inconvenience people. The ban does not apply to senior citizens, children below 12, women, journalists, law enforcement personnel in uniform and employees of essential services.
