Directed by Mari Selvaraj, Pariyerum Perumal, which chronicles caste-based issues in Tamil Nadu and features Kathir in the role of a youngster from a backward caste facing discrimination, has been identified as one of the most important films in recent times. Bankrolled by Pa Ranjith under his banner Neelam Productions, Santhosh Narayanan composed the music for this venture, while Sridhar cranked the camera and Selva RK was in charge of the editing. The film’s star cast included Kathir playing the title role with Anandhi as the lead opposite him. The supporting cast included Yogi Babu, G Marimuthu, Karate Venkatesan, Poo Ram, Lijesh and Shanmugarajan. It was released on September 28 last year and received rave reviews.

It may be noted that Pariyerum Perumal was selected to be screened at the Dalit Film and Cultural Festival 2019 which took place at Columbia University, New York on February 23 and 24. This was the first edition of the festival, and the selected films explored different assertions of the Dalit identity in cinema.

It was recently announced that the film is all set to be remade in Kannada. To be directed by Gandhi Manivasagam of Kalavani Mappillai fame, Maitreya will play the male lead in the remake. The director is yet to reveal the rest of the cast and crew. Reports say that the shooting of this film will begin in Bengaluru soon.

The Hainan Island International Film Festival takes place at Sanya, Hainan, China. Actor Jackie Chan is the ambassador of the film festival, which is hosted by the provincial government and the Film Bureau of Hainan.
