The hit Tamil film, Pariyerum Perumal, is all set to be remade in Kannada. The film will be directed by Gandhi Manivasagam of Kalavani Mappillai fame. Maitreya will play the male lead in the remake; the director is yet to reveal the rest of the cast and crew. Reports say that the shooting of this film will begin in Bengaluru soon.

Talking to TOI, Maitreya said, “I consider it an honour to have been chosen to star in this remake because Pariyerum Perumal is a wonderful film that is not only hard-hitting and realistic, but also humane. This film will be set in the Mandya region in Karnataka, so I’ve been visiting the place and speaking to the people there to get a hang of the language and the dialect. I will be starting shoot from May-end (sic).”

Directed by Mari Selvaraj, Pariyerum Perumal, which chronicles caste-based issues in Tamil Nadu and features Kathir in the role of a youngster from a backward caste facing discrimination, had impressed both critics and audiences alike and has been identified as one of the most important films in recent times. Bankrolled by Pa Ranjith under his banner Neelam Productions, Santhosh Narayanan composed the music for this venture, while Sridhar cranked the camera and Selva RK was in charge of the editing. The film’s star cast included Kathir playing the title role with Anandhi as the lead opposite him. The supporting cast included Yogi Babu, G Marimuthu, Karate Venkatesan, Poo Ram, Lijesh and Shanmugarajan. It was released on September 28 and received rave reviews.

It may be noted here that Maitreya is the son of the film financier Raghunandan. He is also AVM Guhan’s son-in-law. Maitreya had accused director Mysskin of cheating him by promising him the hero role in Psycho. The role eventually went to Udhayanidhi Stalin.
