The 88th Academy Awards started with a bang as actor-comedian Chris Rock nailed the opening monologue with a skillful mix of social commentary and humour about racism in Hollywood, an issue that has dominated debates this awards season.

‪He wasted no time in acknowledging the dominance of white nominees, a situation brought into focus by the Twitter shorthand #Oscarssowhite.

‪The comedian stayed true to his uncompromising stand-up style throughout the opener, offering a commentary on police violence and skewering the Hollywood elite for choosing not to show up.

‪However, the rest of the ceremony took place as usual with one exception. Leonardo DiCaprio finally won!
