Haritha John| The News Minute| February 15, 2015| 12.30 pm ISTFollow @Harithajohn1In the last week of January 2015, the BJP in Kerala called for a hartal in Alappuzha assembly constituency in Alappuzha district. The party enforced complete shutdown over the murder of BJP secretary of Alappuzha constituency, which they claimed was a political murder. But according to the investigations, the BJP was wrong about this, very wrong. What unfolded, was a story that’s nothing short of being a suspense thriller“Venugopal and Chandralal alias Emmachen were thick friends, and they were part of a quotation gang (quotation gangs take money to threaten, beat up or even kill people). But they fought over a drug deal. That’s when things fell apart and Venugopal killed his friend Emmachen, who was also a DYFI member,” police officer Uttaman said.VenugopalThis happened in March 2013.What followed later could have been a typical mafia type story, Emmachen’s gang waits for two years and kills Venugopal when they get the chance. But here the story is a bit different. It is not the gang of men with Emmachen, but a gang of women lead by his widowed wife who planned the murder, say the police.Thirty-five-year-old Smitha, wife of Emmachen makes the plan. She seeks help from her friends Rajani, 30, Girija, 38 and Greeshma, 23. The women then hire a gang to execute their plan, to murder Venugopal.According to the police, apart from being a rowdy, Venugopal was also a district level functionary of the BJP in Alappuzha district in Kerala and this made plan difficult and time consuming to implement. Also was the fact that Venugopal was the prime accused in the Chandralal alias Emmachen murder case and was out on bail. Like all accused out on bail, he was under the watch of the local police. But Smitha and friends had by then hired a quotation gang. On January 29, the five-member quotation gang, which included an M.Tech degree holder, hacked Venugopal to death during the early hours of the day at his house. The BJP, claimed that the murder was a result of a political rivalry and called for a district-wide strike the same day.The police busted the quotation gang soon. But it was further investigation that led police to unravel the true story. The deadly gang apart from an M.Tech graduate Sharon and three others had a BJP member called Jayaraj. This raised suspicion in the minds of the police whether it was really a political rivalry. Why would a BJP man kill his own party colleague?“There is no political connection in this murder. The prime accused Sharon had an affair with Smitha’s sister, and other gang members also had relationships with the arrested women. That is how they got involved,” sub inspector Uttaman said.Smitha and two others who made the plan have been arrested and the police is in look out for the fourth lady. The investigation has concluded that the murder was a result of gang fight and that all those involved were criminals with links with drug mafia and sex racket. Tweet Read : "I am being harassed by authorities": Facebook post of dead Doctor activist Shanavas said
