The News Minute | June 22, 2014 | 8:29 AM IST Kerala's prison authorities have finally banned smoking on the campus of the prison. In a positive move, the police also said they will set up to provide de-addiction counseling.  The ban was based on a Supreme Court ruling that banned smoking in public. Prison authorities feel that habit of smoking among prisoners must be brought down gradually and the stopped completely. Reports say that the purchase of beedi and cigarette in Kannur Central Jail itself amounts to almost Rs 40 lakh a year. The jail officials say that the purchase of beedi and cigarette has been stopped, and that whatever is left will be supplied little by little to  prison canteens but any kind of tobacco used will stop by July 17.
