Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja on Friday sought a report from the state health secretary over the death of a mother and her newborns at the Kottayam Medical College.

28-year old Jyothi who was admitted in the hospital on June 7, delivered triplets on June 14. One of the babies was stillborn while the other died two days later. The critically ill mother was shifted to the ICU but lost her life on Thursday night. The surviving infant is now in ICU.

Jacob John -Jyothi’s husband- has alleged that medical negligence is the cause of the untimely deaths of his wife and newborns.

“On June 10, four days before her delivery, she had bleeding and leakage of amniotic fluid. If they had administered the correct treatment at that point of time, they could have saved my wife’s life at least,” Jacob told The News Minute.

“It was only after being shifted to the medical ICU after delivery that she was given proper treatment, but they had not done so before delivery, though we had informed the doctors about her bleeding. We will move ahead with legal procedures,” he added.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death. “A case has been registered and the probe is on. Enquiries are being made to ascertain whether medical negligence too is involved. We have to wait for the autopsy report for more details regarding the same,” said K Manoj, sub-inspector at the Gandhinagar police station to TNM.
