The Parliament session just ended and one would assume that so have the strange and amusing protests by Andhra political parties, including those by TDP MP Siva Prasad.

But in another eye-catching protest, Anantapur’s Hindupur YSRCP cadre decided to organise a protest by getting their heads tonsured.

In the symbolic protest, which was held in the heart of Hindupur, 420 YSRCP members, led by Naveen Nischal, assembly in charge, YSRCP, got their heads tonsured on Monday.

Speaking at the event, Naveen Nischal criticised both the union and the state governments for failing to fulfil the bifurcation promises and getting the Special Category Status (SCS) for the state.

The relay protest has been continuing in Hindupur in support of the YSRCP MPs who are on a hunger strike in Delhi.

When TNM contacted Naveen Nischal, the YSRCP leader said, “Both leaders, CM Chandrababu Naidu and PM Narendra Modi, have cheated the people of Andhra Pradesh. We wanted to show the people symbolically that the duo are cheaters.”

He added, “PM Modi first dragged it for 2 years despite the assurance in the State Reorganisation Act, then he tried to silence us with special package. Now they (BJP/union government) are saying they can’t give SCS. This is nothing but going back on their promises and cheating the Andhra people.”

Lashing out at CM Naidu, whom he calls “first cheater”, Naveen said, “He changed his stand on SCS several times. He even ordered the authorities to file cases against those who talked about SCS. Now he is talking about ‘all party meetings’ for state interests just to protect himself. This is nothing but another effort to cheat the people.”

The tonsure protest by the huge number of YSRCP members has gone viral on social media.

On the other hand, national leaders are singing praises of the indefinite hunger strike by the YSRCP MPs.

Extending his support, former President of Janata Dal (United), Sharad Yadav, met YSRCP MPs Mithun Reddy and Avinash Reddy, who have been on indefinite hunger strike for 4 days at Andhra Bhawan. Pledging his support, he said that the YSRCP has been genuinely fighting for SCS for Andhra Pradesh.

“The Prime Minister didn’t fulfil the promises he made to Andhra Pradesh after the bifurcation. The fight by the YSRCP for SCS for the state is genuine and they have been doing great work. The then prime minister Manmohan Singh gave an assurance in Parliament that after division every problem would be addressed with the help of the Central Government. But PM Narendra Modi has ignored it.”
