On Thursday, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the CIA ran a secret jail on Polish soil, something that the CIA and Poland have denied for years. Reuters reports that the court said it had been established that the CIA used a facility in a Polish forest to interrogate suspected Al-Qaeda operatives.
Amrit Singh, Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s daughter, lawyer with the Open Society Justice Initiative represented one of the men who filed the case. The case was filed by two inmates at the Guantanamo Bay US military’s prison in Cuba. They had alleged that they were taken to this secret facility in Poland. The court found that Poland violated its obligation under the European Convention on Human Rights. The convention obliges countries to prevent torture and ensure the right to liberty.
The court has also asked Poland to pay both the men in damages. Reuters says the court ruling will have implications for other European states alleged to have similar CIA prisons.
