In a major breather to the Kannada film industry, the proposal to set up Janata theatres across Karanataka, which will give priority to screening of low-budget Kannada films, seems to have made progress.

The Times of India reports that the state government has allotted funds for the construction of 100 Janatha theatres across the state.

SV Rajendra, chairman of Chalanachitra Academy has been quoted as saying that the government will build 30 theatres under the first phase.

"We should have at least 30 theatres in the first phase, and the process has already been initiated. We hope the government releases grants on time," he told TOI.

Though Kannada film industry is one of the leading film industries in terms of the number of films released every year, the reality of disappearing of single-screen theatres in the state looms large over the industry.
