The Karnataka High Court on Thursday convicted a couple for killing their 24-day-old baby in Kukke Subramanya in 2011.

According to a Deccan Herald report, the couple was convicted for culpable homicide for killing the baby that was conceived before their marriage. They have been sentenced to seven years imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 1 lakh each has also been imposed on them.

Shekhar V Harikanth, an Army man, and Nagarathna, both natives of Kumta taluk in Uttara Kannada district conceived from their relationship before marriage. They got married four months later and the baby was born, five months post their marriage.

In an attempt to cover up the fact that the baby was conceived before marriage, the couple went to Kukke Subramanya temple in March 2011, where they murdered the baby and abandoned its body on the bridge across river Kumaradhara.

The couple had earlier been acquitted by a lower court as the prosecution failed to produce evidence against the accused.
