Kevin murder case: Cops say bride’s brother is hiding in TN, name father as accused

The police said they have reason to believe Neenu’s brother, Shanu Chacko, made a stop at his wife’s house in Peroorkada, before fleeing to Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu.

The Kerala police have named Neenu's father Chacko as the 14th accused in the abduction and murder of Kevin P Joseph, the Kottayam youth who married Neenu against her parents wishes.

Inspector General Vijay Sakhare, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that there were 14 people accused in the case. Most of the accused belong to bride Neenu's family, who were against her marrying Kevin, a Dalit Christian.

Meanwhile, the police said they have reasons to believe that Neenu's brother Shanu Chacko, the main accused who allegedly masterminded the plan, is in hiding in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu.

"Shanu visited Peroorkada, his wife's house, after he allegedly committed the murder. He then moved to Nagercoil from here. A special team has been sent to Nagercoil to trace Shanu. He allegedly has relatives in the place," said an officer from the Peroorkada police station.

Shanu's wife's family has reportedly denied that he ever came to Peroorkada. The police are checking CCTV footage around the area to confirm his visit

According to reports, Shanu Chacko reached India from the Middle East after learning about his sister's marriage to Kevin. He came down with the intention of ensuring his sister came back to her family.

On being questioned by the police, Shanu's wife also stated that she had been in touch with Shanu since May 26, the day he arrived and left his bags at her place to bring back his sister. However, she had no idea if he was plotting a murder.

She also stated that Shanu had told her that his father Chacko had arranged for a few men to bring Neenu back home.

Kevin and Neenu were in a relationship for two years. When Neenu’s family began seeking an alliance for her, she and Kevin applied to get their marriage registered on May 25th, Friday. On Sunday night, a gang of armed men entered Kevin’s residence in Kottayam and abducted him.

Kevin’s body was later found in a ditch in Chaliyekkara, a few miles away from Thenmala where the girl’s family lives. According to sources, Neenu’s family who are well to do were opposed to her relationship with Kevin, who was a Dalit Christian.
