The Kerala assembly committee on official languages has recommended on a sitting on Tuesday to discuss if the use of Malayalam as official language be widened to all government documents, including those such as autopsy reports.
It was also suggested that the forensic words which doesn’t have exact corresponding word in Malayalam should be transliterated.
The committee’s MLAs, EK Bijimol, UR Pradeep, K Anslan and DK Murali, suggested that respective departments should make sure that government’s administrative language programme is implemented effectively. They also alleged that the departments had failed to do so.
ES Bijimol, who heads the committee, said that officers should get training in Malayalam Unicode typing.
“Online applications for the district projects should be in Malayalam. Documents submitted by district authorities before High court and Supreme Court should be prepared in Malayalam,” she said, reports The New Indian Express.
They also suggested the use Malayalam in electricity and water bills so that it doesn’t create any confusion for common man. They also said that there is nothing wrong in using popular familiar English words in the documents.
Additional district magistrate CK Prakash stated that many government employees were not using Malayalam. He also questioned the language skills of candidates selected through optical mark recognition by the public service commission, reports The Times of India.
