A 19-year-old college student in Palakkad reportedly committed suicide on Monday, and left behind a note blaming her classmates and teachers for pushing her to take the extreme step.

The deceased, identified as Aswathy, was a student of Physics at Sree Narayana Guru College of Advanced Studies at Alathur, in Palakkad.

There were only ten students in her class – five male and five female. In her note, Aswathy alleged that four other female students and a teacher were responsible for her suicide.

On Monday morning, Aswathy left home at 8 in the morning as usual to college. Her mother, Sunitha, works as a tailor and her father, Manikandan, is a carpenter.

Later in the day, Sunitha tried calling her younger daughter, and when she failed to pick up her calls, she called her college. She learnt that Aswathy hadn’t gone to college that day.

“When she learnt that Aswathy had not gone to college, she merely assumed she had returned home and was there,” Hemambika Circle Inspector C Premanandan told TNM.

Aswathy reportedly came home when neither her parents nor her older sister were there.

The police suspect Aswathy hanged herself at around 10 in the morning. Sunitha discovered her daughter’s body, hanging from the ceiling, when she came home at Puthupariyaram after work.

“Sunitha reached her house at around 5 in the evening. The death had happened many hours before that, around 10 in the morning we think,” the inspector added.

According to the police, while the family are very close to one another, they didn’t have a very large circle outside.

“Aswathhy had fainted four or five times in class, but never complained about feeling any uneasiness or her health to her peers or teachers,” the police added.

Officials are yet to make a statement on the contents of the suicide note and the names of the people mentioned. Her body has been kept at Medical College, Thrissur.
