An express train collided with a jeep parked on the railway tracks in Ramanagaram district at 7.30 am on Saturday. No injuries have been reported thus far.

The Mangala Express, which was carrying 700 passengers and was running from Ernakulam in Kerala to Hazrat Nizamuddin station in Delhi, was travelling near Basavanapura, over 50 km from Bengaluru city, when it suddenly encountered the jeep parked on the tracks.

The owner of the jeep, along with three others, is suspected to have driven to the spot on the tracks for a photo shoot, according to an official at the Chennapatna police station.

“They did not anticipate the train. As they could not move the jeep, they abandoned the jeep in order to save themselves. Since the train was approaching the station, it was travelling at a slower speed and the impact was lesser,” he added.

The station sub-inspector and his team are trying to trace the men through the vehicle registration number.

After a few technical checks on the engine and the tracks, the train was allowed to continue onward at around 10 am.
